REVENGE IS SWEET

Mrs. A piled Tommy’s ice cream cone with yummy chocolate chip ice cream. Love those double-deckers! Licking my lips I could almost taste those chocolate chunks.

But would my family scoop any in my bowl? Looking at the dry dog food that was supposed to be ‘tasty’ I knew the answer—NO! There’d be no dog-food-covered scoops of ice cream for me.

Maybe if I’d been born a cat. People tended to let those little varmints get away with more. Cats get milk. Ice cream equals milk. So of course, humans would reason that those precious little fur balls would get ice cream, too. Life isn’t always fair for a dog. So, a dogs gotta do, what a dogs gotta do.

With a keen eye I watched as Tommy squatted down on the floor in front of the TV. Slowly I eased my way over. Tommy reached for the remote to flip through the channels. That’s when I made my play. Faster than lightening speed I dashed toward his cone, emptying it of its contents. Man, two scoops of ice cream are a lot for even a dog. I threw my head back and gulped it down.

“MOM!” Tommy shouted.

Oops. Maybe I should have stopped long enough to cover Plan B—my escape plan.

“Sarge!” Mr. A shouted.

Quicker than I could turn around to look over my shoulder, he grabbed my collar. As hard as he pulled forward I pushed back. Picture a fish on a hook trying to swim backwards—that’s what I looked like trying to run for my life.

“Come on, boy,” Mr. A said and jerked on my collar. “Time for you to take a trip outside.”

Well, if it was only a trip. I quit fighting and headed for the door.

“Whoa.” Mr. A almost fell when I quit struggling.

If dogs could laugh, I would have. The things we miss out on. Panting would be my only means of snicker.

RUFF RUFF RUFF

Of course an anxious bark helps, too. Let Mr. A know he’s slowing down a bit. It’s always good to keep those humans on their toes.

Mr. A opened the sliding glass door and let me out on the back porch. Can’t say I minded going out this time. It’d give Tommy some time to cool off. Maybe he’d think about being selfish with leftovers. But I doubted it.

Breathing in a breath of fresh air after an afternoon rain did a dog good. I inhaled deeper. A bird flew into the yard and landed on the grass near the garden.

RUFF RUFF

I chased after it.

Dogs double as scarecrows, too. You usually only see scarecrows in some old movie people watch on TV and in the fall. Yep, dogs get double duty since those stuffed circus clowns stopped hanging around.

The bird took off no sooner than my paws hit the grass. Reckon he’s heard about my reputation and figured he better leave. Good for him I cut him some slack.

Belch.

Not to mention the ice cream kind of slowed me down a little. Wonder what that bird was looking for anyway?

Aha! I found it.
